High Friction Surfacing Thermo(hot)
Thermoplastic Type 1 is a highly durable, hot screed, specialist hand applied, skid resistant surface treatment consisting of a polymer modified plasticised rosin ester incorporating 100% high PSV calcined bauxite. It provides a well textured durable matrix typically 5mm thick. The system can be readily applied to asphalt, macadam and concrete surfaces (providing the latter is suitably primed) and is available in Guyanan or Chinese Bauxite grades. Thermoplastic Type 1 can be pigmented for specialist application.
Typical Applications
Thermo Type 1 is suitable for all classes of road including for use on sharp bends, bridges, roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, junctions and other hazard sites.
Benefits
Conforms to Clause 924 of the Specification for Highways Works (March 1998) and is a Type 1 certified BBA/HAPAS High Friction Surfacing System, Certificate No. 00/H043.
Manufactured to Quality Assurance BSENISO9001:2000 and Environmental Standard BS EN ISO 14001:2004.
Less weather sensitive than epoxy and polyurethane based products and therefore can be applied all year round.
Suitable for new or old surfaces. Rapidly set at ambient temperature in typically 30-50 minutes @ 20oC.
Preparation and Installation
The surface shall be treated using a hot compressed air lance with a velocity of 400-600mps operating at 800°C to remove dust, laitance and foreign matter. Unless otherwise directed by the Engineer, all existing road markings, ironwork and studs shall be suitably masked. The material shall be loaded into a preheater mixer fitted with positive temperature control, mechanical agitation via hydraulically driven stirrers, heating the material to the application temperature range according to the specific method statement for the product.. Material shall not be heated above 230oC as this will lead to degradation (indicated by discolouration) of the binder component.
The material shall be poured into a screed box of appropriate size (200mm-500mm) with a suitably designed trailing edge, and applied by combing transversely across the road surface, allowing the high PSV aggregate to be evenly distributed. This provides a well textured (texture depth approx 1.5mm), durable skid resistant surface, with a minimum Skid Resistance Value (SRV) of 65 when measured by the pendulum method. The coverage rate of material shall not be less than noted in the method statement for the materials being applied, i.e. it is recommended on high traffic areas a reduced coverage rate should be applied.
On a more rigorous surface a further reduction in spread rate may be necessary.
